Four researchers from the Materials-Envi Lab (MEL) have been included in this year’s edition of the international Research.com ranking. Alongside MEL Director and one of the most cited Czech scientists, Radek Zbořil, the list also features chemists Aristeidis Bakandritsos, Giorgio Zoppellaro, and visiting researcher Manoj Gawande.

According to the ranking, physical chemist Radek Zbořil is the top Czech scientist in the field of materials science, placing 365th globally. In the chemistry category, he ranks second in the Czech Republic and 334th worldwide—an improvement in both fields compared to the previous year.

“Being included in this ranking reflects extensive effort and strong teamwork. That’s why I’m proud not only of my own results, but also of the success of my MEL colleagues. Even some universities don’t have such strong representation—let alone individual research groups,” Zbořil commented.

Also ranked among the top researchers in materials science is Aristeidis Bakandritsos, whose work focuses on the development of functional materials for applications in biomedicine, catalysis, and energy storage. Nationally, he holds the 24th position. “Such recognition is incredibly motivating and makes us push the boundaries of our research. At the same time, it highlights the collective dedication and hard work of the entire team,” said Bakandritsos.

In the chemistry category, Giorgio Zoppellaro also made it into the national top 100, ranking 89th. His research spans materials science, molecular magnetism, biophysics, nanomedicine, and spin-correlated photophysical phenomena. At MEL, he specializes in the application of electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR).

Manoj Gawande, a visiting professor at the CEET Nanotechnology Centre, was also ranked among the top chemists. In addition to his academic work, Gawande serves as an editor for several scientific journals and focuses on the development and synthesis of nanomaterials for use in sustainable chemistry.

In compiling the ranking, Research.com evaluated 37,820 scientists in the field of materials science and 121,518 in chemistry. Rankings are based on a scientist’s D-index (disciplinary H-index), which considers only publications and citation metrics within the given field.
