Michele Melchionna
Prof. Michele Melchionna is Associate Professor at the University of Trieste (Italy), and since November 2025 also Supervisor at the Materials-Env Lab (MEL), Nanotechnology Center (CNT), Center for Energy and Environmental Technologies (CEET), VSB-Technical University of Ostrava, (Czechia). He obtained his PhD in Chemistry in 2007 from the University of Edinburgh (UK) and covered positions as post-doctoral fellow at the University of Helsinki (2008-2010), at the Palacky University in Olomouc (2012), and at the University of Trieste (2013-2017). In between academic positions, he has worked as Higher Scientific Officer at the Food Standards Agency (2007) in London (UK) and as Senior R&D Chemist at Advanced Molecular Technologies (2010-2011) in Melbourne (Australia).
His research focuses on the development of heterogeneous catalysts for sustainable energy and environmental related process (biomass valorization, CO2 and O2 reduction, H2 evolution, water oxidation) as well as for sustainable organic synthesis. Target catalytic materials include hierarchical nanostructures and carbon-inorganic nanohybrid materials, with a functionality dependent upon synergistic phase effects as well as by specific sub-structural domains. Part of his interest dedicate at the understanding of the fundamental mechanistic aspects in heterogeneous catalytic reactions, by investigation of the structure/activity relationship.
He authored about 100 articles in peer review journals, which received ~ 7000 citations leading to a current h-index of 36 (Scopus).
