Dr. Jan Schäfer (ORCID 0000-0002-0652-5057) is an experimental physicist and researcher at VŠB-TUO, CEET, MELab in Ostrava. He received his PhD in 2007 from the University of Greifswald in Germany. He is the author of more than 75 peer-reviewed publications, which have been cited over
1300 times according to the ResearchGate database. He has an h-index of 22. His research focuses on the development of methods for the synthesis of nanomaterials using plasma technology and their complex characterization by advanced microscopy and X-ray and infrared spectroscopy.

He started his successful international career as a scientist at the Leibniz Institute for Plasma Science and Technology in Greifswald (INP), where he supervised the Surface Analysis Laboratory and the Application Laboratory. He developed several plasma sources, the most famous of which is HelixJet. As a project leader, he established the cooperation with the University of Sheffield. Since 2007, he has worked on a total of 6 industrial projects and 3 framework projects in fundamental research. Since Juli 2024, he has been Head of Microscopy at VŠB-TUO in the MELab. His goal is to establish an electron microscopy laboratory with state-of-the-art equipment (HRSEM, EDS, FIB-SEM, EBSD, TEM), which will serve as a core facility for national and international projects in the field of single atom engineering.
